Anne Hathaway's Oscar Jewelry Breakdown

Did you hear? Everyone is shocked SHOCKED that Anne Hathaway was reportedly paid $750,000 to wear the gorgeous Tiffany jewelry we all gawked at on Sunday night! And that Gwyneth? She got $500,000 for sporting those Louis Vuitton L'ame du Voyage sparklers!

Yeah....And?

Why is it such a surprise that big stars are paid to endorse product on the largest fashion stage in the world? Grow up, people! Paying and gifting the privileged for air time has been going on for decades.

We can hate the stars from afar for their god-given talent, their gazillion-dollar bank accounts and the fact that people fall all over themselves to give them crazy carats - and pay them to boot - but it shouldn't be a surprise, folks.  Don't you watch The Rachel Zoe Project?

OK. With that behind us, let's now take a closer look at the (count 'em!) 8 different Tiffany jewelry looks Anne Hathaway was paid $750,000 to wear on Oscar night. That bitch.

2011 Oscar Jewelry Predictions

The art of Oscar fashion forecasting hasn't been around long, but I can guarantee I'll either be the smartest person in the world come Monday morning, or I'll just join the chorus of fashionistas who found the red carpet to be full of (gasp!) "sartorial surprises".

One thing I do know for sure? Guiliana Rancic and Ryan Seacrest are going to drive me to drink. So the champagne is already chilling and the aspirin strategically placed on the nightstand.

AND, as usual,  I'll be joined this Sunday by the best and brightest jewelry minds in the Twitter-sphere as we Live Tweet our way through the E! Oscar Red Carpet Coverage starting at 6:00PM EST using #oscarjewelry. You don't want to miss it, jewelry hounds. We all get cheeky about 7:00 after the champagne kicks in.

One more quick shout out to all you fashion forecasters: JewelClub is having a 'Guess What Jewelry Anne Hathaway Will Wear" contest on their Facebook Page (Love it!) and they're giving away free jewelry. You guys are some of the brightest diamonds in the jewelry box, so click here, weigh in and enjoy the spoils of your 'labor'.

2011 Oscar Jewelry Predictions:

1. Dainty, Delicate, Diamonds

Sheer, lacey looks rocked the New York Fashion Week runways earlier this month, and my guess is the trend will trickle down to Oscar jewelry choices. The Golden Globes had a few key light-weight looks back in January (Natalie Portman, Dianna Agron), and I expect the 'less is more' elegance to continue Sunday night.

2. Big Rings

I love big rings. The problem is: we never really get a good look at them on the red carpet. That said, the Grammy's were littered with this statement style this year, and I think Oscar stylists will play that trendy tune as well. Who could forget Zoe Saldana's Oscar amethyst show-stopper last year?

3. Flower Power

According to jewelry guru, Michael O'Connor, this flower cuff was included in the ultra-exclusive StyleLab Oscar jewelry selection that Anne Hathaway (among others) got to peruse this week.

While Nicole Kidman's floral Fred Leighton piece at the SAGs was a 'love it or hate it' choice, I think some key celebs are going to get in touch with their inner flower child and make a statement with this silhouette. Peace out, starchild.

4. Color Blind Couture

While the Golden Globes were all about green and pink, I'm going out on a limb to say that no one color is going to dominate this red carpet. Some folks say red, some say blue - but I think we're in color transition-land right now, and we can expect to see a rainbow of hues. (How's that for hedging my bets?)

Seriously, though, I think stars have the freedom to go in any direction with color in gown choice or jewels - as long as they don't try to copy a winner from past years (a la Michelle Williams in her tangerine Vera Wang winner, Angelina's emeralds, etc).

5. The Statement Necklace: It's BAAAAACCCK

I have a funny feeling that the statement necklace craze that peaked in 2009 and waned to nothingness this past year is going to ramp up again at the 2011 Oscars. You can't keep this baby in the corner long. It's a hunch - but if we don't see at least 3 or 4 big stars in this look, I'll chug an entire glass of champagne. Twist my arm!

So be sure to check back with me Sunday night to see if my predictions come true. I'll post my top looks of the night with some champagne-soaked trend commentary thrown in for good measure. I gawk harder...so you don't have to.

Venice Film Festival Jewelry Part Duo

Venice Film Festival fashion has yet to recreate a 'major' moment like the one Rachel Zoe and Anne Hathaway brought to us during the 2009 festivities. But a girl can dream.

In the meantime, here are my favorite jewelry moments since my last post. I was surprised to see so many colored gemstone looks.

Rebecca Hall - who stars in the Ben Affleck-directed film, The Town - is the latest lady from Hollywood to steal the spotlight wearing a teal Vionnet gown and classic Bvlgari serpenti bracelets.

Because Michelle Williams - doing her best Rosemary's Baby-era Mia Farrow impression - doesn't quite deliver in this staid Jason Wu gown with barely there diamond stud earrings and a wisp of a diamond bangle.

These statement earrings are different. You like?

And the woman on the right in this picture? Her last name is Bulgari. 'Nuff said.

Fashion Week starts tomorrow, jewelry hounds. Check back here and in the Jewelry.com Fashion News Section for all the latest jewelry and fashion trends fresh from the runways.

Anne Hathaway's Jewelry Up for Auction

When your boyfriend brings you diamond jewelry like it's your morning latte, you know you've hitched your wagon to one keeper of a pony.

Unless you're Anne Hathaway.

The Cinderella story of Miss Anne and her uber-rich boyfriend Raffaello Follieri hit a snag back in 2008 when he was convicted of 14 felony counts of fraud, so the Feds are trying to recoup his losses Bernie Madoff-style by auctioning off anything and everything he owned - including the jewelry he gave to Anne.

Hathaway, who broke up with then-arrested Follieri in June 2008, turned the items over to the FBI that August, including two watches, two rings, two bracelets, two necklaces, two chains, silver earrings, and a Louis Vuitton box. While the jewelry's total value has not been disclosed, a gold Rolex Cosmograph Daytona given to Hathaway retails for about $25,000.

But all's well that ends well. Follieri is serving a 4/12 year sentence, and A-lister Annie's only crime is her performance in Valentine's Day.

What would you do with jewelry given to you by a lying, cheating ex? This excellent site, www.exboyfriendjewelry.com ("You don't want it, he can't have it back!") has the perfect answer - and a brilliant business plan. Check it out!

Vote for Your Favorite Tony Award Jewel

The Tony Awards were full of surprises last night, not the least of which was Bret Michaels' near-death run-in with a descending set piece during the opening number. Oh, Bret...

But my favorite part of the night was gawking at the red carpet jewels. From diamonds and gemstones to silver and gold - all categories were present and accounted for.

What's your favorite Tony jewelry statement? Is it classic Anne Hathaway in diamond clusters? A sultry Gina Gershon in vintage Fred Leighton? Or maybe you're partial to glam rock chic? Weigh in with your vote in the poll at the right, jewelry hounds!

And I couldn't resist putting the Bret Michaels moment from YouTube here for your viewing pleasure. Not to worry. He isn't seriously injured, but as the quick-witted host, Neil Patrick Harris, wisely cracked:

"He's given a whole new meaning to head banger"

The Emperor's New Movie

What would entice some of Hollywoods hottest divas to spend an evening in a museum? Designer clothes and a movie of course. Blondes, brunettes and razor thin silhouettes turned out in force to honor the last Emperor of fashion and catch a movie premiere.

Special effects be gone - this one was all about the clothes..... Valentino's clothes. The documentary, Valentino: The Last Emperor, debuted in New York last night at the Museum of Modern Art with an audience of hard-core fashionistas, wanna-be fashionistas, muses, critics and the seriously beautiful.

Valentino is renowned for his penchant for all things - well all things extravagant. He's never been one to nod in the direction of minimilism. The septuagenarian designer, with his perma-orange tan, is known for his outlandish sense of more is more and less isn't by any means more. The movie, (which has been receiving mixed reviews - depends I suppose on where you stand on the more or less side of the scale) shows the man's six pugs on board their master's private jet, having their teeth brushed and being adorned with diamond earrings.

Doggy diamond earrings, now there's a thought (that should be banished).

Last night it was a diamonds on divas - not dogs that were causing a rucus. Surprisingly not as much bling as one would expect in an evening devoted to the Emperor himself.
Madonna, Gwyneth, Anne and Agyness were on hand to bow before the Emperor. Madge sporting a knuckleduster ring and looking as ageless as ever. Gwyneth in her signature black - and Ms. Hathaway knocking 'em all for six in a stunning white dress and just the right amount of bling.........

Score one for the brunettes last night....way to go Anne.

Jewelry Shines at the 2009 Academy Awards

Aside from the much-anticipated Angelina Jolie / Jennifer Aniston showdown, jewelry fashion was the talk of the town leading up to last night’s Oscar telecast. Diamonds? Gemstones? Gold? Would the stars bring out the bling, or would the economy force the A-list to keep the diamonds on the down-low?

Well, thank the jewelry gods above that the stars ignored the gloom and doom-ers and positively lit up the red carpet with jewels – from giant statement looks to tasteful, show-stopping diamond glamour.

The Statement Makers included a fiery Amy Adams in red Carolina Herrera and a lobster bib-sized Fred Leighton gemstone statement necklace from the 1950s, a sparkling Taraji P. Henson in Roberto Cavalli and a vintage diamond flower necklace - also from Fred Leighton, and Heidi Klum who rocked a Roland Mouret red dress with $900,000 worth of Lorraine Schwartz diamond jewels. And, of course, my winner of the night, Angelina Jolie, in Lorraine Schwartz emeralds, who reminded me how much fun it is to gasp aloud at the televsion.

Light colors with tasteful diamond looks
also made a frequent appearance last night. Oscar-winner and Woody Allen muse, Penelope Cruz, looked stunning in vintage Balmain and a 69-carat cushion cut diamond necklace, a 21-carat starburst yellow diamond ring, and 11-carat diamond stud earrings - all from Chopard. That’s $3 million in diamonds in case you were wondering. Odios Mio!

And Anne Hathaway surprised us all with her musical-theater skills and her impeccable fashion sense as she glowed in Armani Prive and Cartier. I take back every evil pants-suited remark I made, Anne, after boo-hooing my way through that Shirley MacLain tribute to you.

Also on the light side of fashion was Marisa Tomei in Versace and vintage jewels from Van Cleef & Arpels that included a 1941 diamond and sapphire bracelet, a 1960 diamond ring, and 1973 lapis and diamond earrings.

Color couture
added a much needed rainbow effect as Natalie Portman was the prettiest in pink Rodarte and rocky diamonds studs, Freida Pinto stunned in purple Galiano and gemstone drop earrings, and Alica Keys shimmered in a lilac Armani Prive frock with jaw-dropping diamond-leaf earrings.

And what is a red carpet without our Metallic Mavens? Viola Davis won the category in my book with a shimmering Reem Acra gold gown and a series of icey diamond bangles. Tina Fey, whose schtick with Steve Martin made me fall in love with her all over again, wore the most stunning silvery Zac Posen number I’ve ever seen on her. And Jennifer Aniston finally gave up the black (and the pants suit) for a bejeweled Valentino number with minimal bling.

And much like Hugh Jackman’s bizarre interpretive Reader dance and the weird attempt to make a Wall-e/Jai-Ho mash up (Peter Gabriel was SO right to opt out of that one), there were some missteps worthy of mention.

Melissa Leo’s mismatched jewels did nothing to help her unfortunate gown choice, Beyonce totally misfired with this gaudy gold and black number from her mother’s line, and the ‘age appropriate’ police needed to arrest both Miley Cyrus and Sophia Loren. Not a good choice there, ladies.

And I’m going to get flack for this, but I thought both Kate Winslet and Meryl Streep could have chosen better this year. And Sarah Jessica Parker was just a bit too Glinda the Good Witch for me. There. I said it.

But all in all, the Oscars gave this jewelry hound a glittering night to remember full of worthy winners, fashion marvels and jewels, jewels, jewels. Weigh in with your own musings, jewelry lovers!

And stay tuned for my Oscar After Party jewelry remix with Halle "can your husband be any more gorgeous?" Berry, Madonna, Mickey Rourke's Loki choker and more…
